An ironic congregation occupies a stage-like tableau, twelve elongated figures ringed with small halos and caught in a ritual both comic and solemn. Against a dusky horizontal wash and crimson curtains, the artist arranges a lateral procession, a shallow depth that reads like a theatrical set. The palette is restrained, jewel-toned garments punctuating the somber brown and black ground, while meticulous, almost naΓ―f brushwork renders facial caricatures with surprising tenderness. Objects scattered on the table, from glass and a fish to keys, become silent props in this allegory, their lucid highlights sharpening contrast. Suggestive of folk surrealism and late expressionist elongation, the scene invites a wry contemplation of ceremony, faith and human foibles.
