Notes on still water

90×80 cm

Acrylic on canvas

An austere reverie of layered planes, this composition arranges muted blocks of charcoal, ochre, and bone white into a quietly theatrical architecture. A central pale column, built from scraped impasto and tender scumbles, divides a dense, velvety black mass from earth-toned intervals, generating tension through contrast and measured negative space. Broad, economical brushstrokes and moments of abrasion reveal an artisan's hand, the work feeling both constructed and inadvertently fragmented. The palette's restrained warmth grants the piece an introspective hush, its influences tracing to Abstract Expressionism and postwar European abstraction, yet it retains a contemporary minimalism. It is at once stoic and sly, a painting that prefers a soft revelation over loud declaration.

About the author
Justyna Spórna (b. 1998, Myślenice) is a painter who finds an inexhaustible source of inspiration in nature. Her work seeks harmony between color, light, and emotion, resulting in paintings that record both inner experiences and a keen observation of the world. She draws inspiration from the landscape—the texture of tree bark, the rhythm of forests, the monumental scale of canyons, and the ever-changing nature of the natural world. Music serves as an equally important point of reference, dictating her working pace and influencing her composition and use of color. These two worlds intertwine in her paintings, creating a space filled with intuition, movement, and emotion. She works primarily with acrylics on canvas. Her paintings are not literal depictions of reality but rather an attempt to capture the mood, energy, and beauty hidden within nature. Justyna Spórna’s works have been exhibited and offered by auction houses such as DESA Unicum and Libra Auction.
