Kraków – Market Square

Kraków – Market Square

/SOLD/

20×50 cm

Oil on canvas

This painting is a lyrical homage to one of Central Europe’s most iconic urban landscapes: the Main Market Square of Kraków. With a blend of tenderness and technical mastery, the artist captures not only the architectural splendor of the Cloth Hall, the Church of St. Adalbert, and the soaring Mariacki Tower, but also the soul of the city – a delicate equilibrium of history, daily rhythm, and timeless charm.
Rendered in a style that combines Impressionistic luminosity with touches of classical realism, the composition is suffused with radiant light that plays across the canvas like a living presence. Reflections shimmering on the wet cobblestones suggest a sunlit moment just after rain, perhaps in early spring, when the city glows with quiet vitality. The color palette is rich and warm: azure skies, golden façades, and earthy reds come together to form a vibrant, almost theatrical harmony.
At the heart of the scene, a white horse-drawn carriage glides across the square – a romantic and symbolic motif evoking tradition, grace, and a wistful sense of continuity. It serves as a gentle nod to Kraków as a living city, where the past isn’t relegated to memory, but coexists seamlessly with the present.
The artist's technique reveals a seasoned hand and a refined sensitivity. Thick, visible brushstrokes create a tactile sense of depth without overwhelming the viewer with minutiae. The balance between architectural detail and painterly softness is handled with finesse. The slight distortions in perspective add a dynamic, emotional resonance – this is not a photographic record, but an expressive map of memory and feeling.
This work transcends the genre of the postcard-perfect cityscape. It is an artistic interpretation, not merely a representation – a painting that tells the story of a place rather than just showing it. The interplay of light, the richness of form, and the evocation of atmosphere all make this a standout piece, ideal for both collectors of urban art and those who wish to hang a window into the soul of Kraków on their wall.

About the author
Andrzej Dąbek is an artist whose creative activities are focused around Judaic culture. Fascinated by the Bible, he draws from its content, transporting himself and us to another dimension. This is what he says about himself:

My visions and fascinations was born from the space of the Living Word. Memory intertwined with imagination, whispering: Go higher and higher, to the source of inspiration. The images of the prophets' expectations, full of comparisons and references, encouraged me to make a vivid commentary. Maybe it will become a path leading to the treasury of understanding God's plan for us?

Andrzej Dąbek was born in 1956 in Kraków, where he still lives and works. He graduated from the Art High School and then studied art education at the WSP under the supervision of, among others, Stanisław Rodziński and Stanisław Batruch. The artist's works are distinguished by thematic uniformity and the simultaneous diversity of techniques used: oil painting, watercolours, pastels, drawings, collages.

Andrzej Dąbek has had numerous exhibitions, including: the Isaac Synagogue in Kraków, the Synagogue in Łęczna, the seat of the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Częstochowa, the Białoprądnicki Manor, and the Museum in Chrzanów. The artist's works are in many private collections in Poland and abroad.
