Andrzej Dąbek , 2024

40×40 cm

Oil on canvas

This evocative painting presents an open book as both a literal object and a symbolic threshold—its pages transforming into a flowing, luminous pathway that leads the viewer’s gaze toward a distant horizon. The composition merges interior imagination with the external world: a sunset sky unfolds in layered hues of amber, rose, and deepening blue, while a flock of birds traverses the atmosphere, suggesting freedom, transition, and narrative continuity.
To the right, a dynamic eruption of pointillist marks—gold, blue, and white—resembles a wave or a constellation, blurring the boundary between matter and energy. This textured field appears to emanate from the book itself, implying that stories are generative forces capable of shaping reality. The gesture of the brushwork contrasts with the calmer, more defined structure of the book, reinforcing a dialogue between order and imagination.
The painting situates the act of reading as a transformative journey: the book is not merely a container of knowledge but a portal through which time, memory, and possibility flow. The curving path formed by the pages leads toward the sun—a recurring symbol of enlightenment, closure, or rebirth—while the birds above echo themes of migration and the passage between worlds.
Overall, the work explores the poetic intersection of literature and landscape, inviting viewers to reflect on how narratives carry us beyond the confines of the physical, into realms shaped by perception, emotion, and creative thought.

About the author

Andrzej Dąbek is an artist whose creative activities are focused around Judaic culture. Fascinated by the Bible, he draws from its content, transporting himself and us to another dimension. This is what he says about himself:

My visions and fascinations was born from the space of the Living Word. Memory intertwined with imagination, whispering: Go higher and higher, to the source of inspiration. The images of the prophets' expectations, full of comparisons and references, encouraged me to make a vivid commentary. Maybe it will become a path leading to the treasury of understanding God's plan for us?

Andrzej Dąbek was born in 1956 in Kraków, where he still lives and works. He graduated from the Art High School and then studied art education at the WSP under the supervision of, among others, Stanisław Rodziński and Stanisław Batruch. The artist's works are distinguished by thematic uniformity and the simultaneous diversity of techniques used: oil painting, watercolours, pastels, drawings, collages.

Andrzej Dąbek has had numerous exhibitions, including: the Isaac Synagogue in Kraków, the Synagogue in Łęczna, the seat of the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Częstochowa, the Białoprądnicki Manor, and the Museum in Chrzanów. The artist's works are in many private collections in Poland and abroad.
