Marek Rojek’s painting grows out of landscape, yet it does not stop at its literal representation. Here, nature becomes a space of imagination — a place where the real landscape meets memory, dream, and emotion. Mountains, water, forests, light, and distant horizons create worlds that feel both familiar and unreal.
Light plays a particularly important role in Rojek’s paintings. At times, it spreads gently across the water; elsewhere, it breaks through the treetops, illuminates mountainous spaces, or creates an almost theatrical atmosphere. Its purpose goes beyond describing a place. Light becomes part of the narrative — guiding the eye, shaping the mood, and opening the painting toward what may exist beyond its physical boundaries.
The artist moves between the observation of nature and the freedom of artistic creation. A landscape may retain its recognizable form, only to shift moments later into a more imaginary realm. This tension between what is real and what is imagined is one of the most compelling aspects of the works presented in this exhibition.
These are therefore not merely paintings of places. They are paintings of states of mind — silence, anticipation, wonder, solitude, tranquility, or the desire to escape from everyday life. The human figure does not need to appear directly. Human presence is revealed through the very way the world is observed.
Beyond the Canvas
The exhibition at AHG36 Gallery expands this idea through immersive experiences. Painting no longer functions solely as a rectangular surface hanging on a wall. Through digital technologies, selected works can become points of entry into spaces constructed from the paintings themselves.
The viewer is therefore invited not only to look at the landscape, but symbolically to step inside it, explore its digital extensions, and experience the relationship between traditional painting and contemporary forms of spatial imagery.
The aim is not to replace the artwork with technology. On the contrary, the digital experience becomes another layer of interpretation. The canvas, the materiality of paint, and the artist’s painterly decisions remain the starting point.
In this way, Marek Rojek’s exhibition poses a simple yet increasingly relevant question:
Where does a painting end?
At the edge of the canvas?
In the viewer’s gaze?
Or perhaps that is precisely where the space begins — a space each of us completes with our own imagination?
